If you get a chance to visit Flores Island, don’t forget to drop by the Wae Rebo Cultural Village located in Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). UNESCO established this village as a world heritage due to its rich social culture and local wisdom and the people’s success in maintaining and preserving this culture.
Be prepared for you eyes to be greeted by the magnificent view of rows of tall traditional houses once you step foot on the village. The 7-kilometer journey will be totally worth it once you enter the village above the clouds. You’ll feel like you’re on top of the world! Each morning, the village located 1,100 meters above seawater is enveloped in clouds softly highlighted by the rays of the morning sun.
The first thing you should do is let a local guide accompany you on a tour of the village. The guide will take you on a journey across all corners of the village while telling you stories about the village’s history, philosophy and cultural activities. This is what makes Wae Rebo a special destination in global tourism. Don’t forget to interact with the locals while you’re there. See how the women weave traditional fabric, kids play with traditional toys and then top off the day with a cup of hot coffee that will surely please your taste buds.
There are two out of the seven traditional homes that are available for you to spend the night. These homestays can manage up to 30 people per home. This would be a great option for those who want to make new friends and interact more with the locals. If you happen to be lucky enough to visit Wae Rebo during certain times of the year, you would have the opportunity to participate in unique traditional ceremonies.
